SELF-PORTRAIT
The El Molo, Kenya, 1987

This self-portrait was taken at the edge of lake Turkana in northern Kenya. It is said to be one of the hottest places on Earth, with temperatures well into the 100's and hot winds blowing day and night, year-round. The area is mostly lava beds, so the most accessible area to photograph was at the edge of the lake. An El Molo girl is pictured with me. Her tribe is the smallest in numbers in Kenya and is found only in the region of the lake. They subsist primarily from fish they catch in the great soda lake, lake Turkana, and live near the shores in huts made from long grass they are able to gather around the lava beds. The two small figures in the background are hurried by their mother to get out of the way of the photograph. However, I liked the action in the image and took the picture as they were scooting away.
